Frank Morton
Frank Morton is the chemical engineering sports day, held annually in a UK or Irish university for all chemeng departments of UK and Ireland. The way it is run now has been going on since 1986, however the concept started off as a single football match between the departments of Birmingham and Manchester (formerly UMIST) in 1961. This thanks to Prof F. Morton who had taught in both departments and had therefore acquired connections there. This brief background and some more details can be found on the Wikipedia page here.
The main reasons to endure this journey are as follows:
And of course, if you have friends doing other subjects at that particular uni, or friends and family living close by, or maybe other chemical engineers you know from your old school/college may be there!
Although Surrey University has never won the event (our department is quite small to fill in all the events, and therefore cannot get the points!) in recent years the department has reached an astounding victory in the dodgeball tournament (2009) and a second place in the football (2011).
With the advent of the Surrey Sports Park, built in 2011, and a continuous growth of the society we are sure that there are possibilities to become more and more competitive. Which is why we need your support!
The main reasons to endure this journey are as follows:
- Visit other cities and universities of the UK
- A great chance for networking at the career's fair
- Prove to the rest of the world that engineers can excel at sports too
- Freebies! :D
- An awesome night out, even if you're not a regular

On a little side note... Frank Morton is another event where ChemEngSoc at Surrey will encourage designs from fellow students (from all years and placement).
These are usually submitted to the facebook page, where everyone can see them, and perhaps refine a pre-existing idea. Download these blank shirt designs, colour them in, place some logos on them, a sponsor and submit it to us! |
